Against the blue sky to the north lay a dark blur that, as our troop train ran on through the level plains of Eastern Bengal, rose ever higher and took shape—the distant line of the Himalayas. Around us the restful though tame scenery of the little Cooch Behar State. The chess-board pattern of mud-banked rice fields, long groves of the graceful feathery bamboo, here and there a tiny hamlet of palm-thatched huts—on their low roofs great sprawling green creepers with white blotches that look like skulls but are only ripe melons. But the dark outlines of the distant mountains drew my gaze and brought the heads of my sepoys out of the carriage windows to stare at them.

Casserly is the author of The Jungle Girl and The Elephant God. He was a British officer stationed in India in 1909. This is his story of that time. Tiger, panther and elephant hunts, life in the hill station chasing bandits, heat and rain and cold. A very interesting look at a time gone by. I enjoyed it very much as I did his other books.Product details

Life in an Indian Outpost Gordon Casserly 9781523989522 Books Reviews
This book gives a glimpse into colonial Indian life and how the military officers experienced their tours of duty. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of hunting through the jungle from the back of an elephant. It felt as if I were riding alongside the author. Great record of a time that is lost forever.
Very disappointed that did not include the numerous photos with the edition. It is really not the same book without the graphics.
