The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come eBook John Fox

This is the third book on Kentucky that I've read in the past 3 months. My family is from Kentucky and I wanted to read some history, especially about the south central and eastern part. Hillbilly Elegy was history and I learned some things about the migration of the "hillbillies" to the north to better themselves and their struggles to fit in. I found it hard to read about the authors own dysfunctional family (that's putting it mildly), however, and that encompassed a lot of the book.

Night Comes to the Cumberland by Harry Caudill, the second book I read, was a history of where the people of Appalachia came from and how they came to be in Kentucky. It told of the beauty of the land but also how over the years it was stripped and how the people were used and deceived by big corporations, especially in the coal mining business. Talked about politics and poverty, etc. Pretty thorough.

The little Shepherd was a beautifully written novel which took place before and during the Civil War. Chad is only 8 when the story begins. He is taken in by a poor but loving family on a mountain in Kentucky and we watch him grow into a young man with many adventures along the way. I didn't want to read about the war but I learned from doing so.

The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come eBook John Fox Reviews

A fitting tribute to a great state. Wish I had read it before I took that magical ride through Kingdom Come. Grateful and anxious to feel it's magic again.
A good historical content book.
My father first read this book to me when I was a child. I, in turn, have read it to my children and grandchildren. It ranks in the top 10% of the best books I have ever read.
I saw this movie when I was around 10 and have never forgotten it. I found the book on , got it and could not hardly put it down. It is as wonderful as I remember it. Great uplifting story.
One of the best things I have ever read. The ending is a tear-jerker.
very well written book of times pre and post civil war. The description of area was very well done. Kingdom come park is a very beautiful area of Kentucky.
This is a story about a young man from the mountains of Kentucky just prior to the civil war. The reader gets to grow with him in age, knowledge and strength. The war begins when he is 18 and takes you to the end. Kentucky was a very divided state where brother against brother was more evident than other states. His choices and loyalties stay true to the end even his choice of true love. I first read this book as a young teenager and have just now revisited it. The writing is superb and characters real. This was also special to me since I was raised in Kentucky and I learned more about the battles and the effects of the war on my home state.
