Asteroid Made of Dragons G Derek Adams Books

The story of Rime and Jonas continues as they face old and new threats on the way to see the King in Gilead. At the same time, a young goblin researcher discovers a secret that's on its way to destroy the world.

Proving that he is no one-hit-wonder, G. Derek Adams releases a third novel in the saga of Rime and Jonas and once again knocks it out of the park. I might be stealing this from another review, but this is an exceptional third book in a series, it seems to do everything right.

The worldbuilding that Adams has set up over the last 3 books is extremely impressive. Layers upon layers of history is revealed in each novel. When I first saw the Precursors in the first novel, I have to admit that I groaned a little bit; the "ancient civilization that mysteriously disappeared and left behind inscrutable technology" thing has been done many times before. Adams has fleshed his Precursors out more than almost any other example I've seen, and subverts the trope enough to bring new life to a tired old idea. I want to know more and more about the history of the world, and Adams teases the reader (in a good way) by slipping out little bits of history and slowly connecting the dots. It makes me want to read the previous novels over again, knowing what I know now, which is a very rare gift.

The deepening(is that a word? Let's make it a word) of the personality of the characters in this book is marvelous as well. We begin to see the deeper sides of the characters that we are familiar with; murderers may have a bit of a conscience, our favorite Wild Mage seems to develop a kernel of affection (platonic, which you have no idea how much I appreciate), while Jonas the... Jonas deals with the conflicting emotions of guilt and self-preservation. The new characters that are introduced are very interesting as well, I can't wait to see where their character arcs go next.

I usually have a lot of trouble with series. Most individual novels don't have good stopping points, the authors use cliffhangers to replace good writing, the books completely shift in quality, or the story seems to have been made up as the author goes along. G. Derek Adams falls into none of these traps, and the story of Rime and Jonas is shaping up to be one of the best series that I've ever read and enjoyed.

(confession: I did like the last one better, but that's more because of the genre shift than the writing by itself. I also think I gave that one 6/5 stars? So I guess that was a pretty high bar to overcome)

5/5 stars, I don't know why this guy isn't famous yet.

Asteroid Made of Dragons G Derek Adams Books Reviews

This was a very fun read. Interesting use of magic, complete role reversals of your typical fantasy novel. The writing is very descriptive and imaginative.
Brightly drawn characters, intriguing plot, nice blend of genres in a fantasy-science fictional world building exercise. Leaves you wanting more, in a good way.

I look forward to any forthcoming sequel.
Fun and engaging. The characters and the world in this story are a nice mix of Terry Pratchett, JK Rowling, and Raymond Feist. That being said, it was a bit rushed, and I would have liked more depth and development.
Finished this book in one sitting which is something I have not done in a long time. The action flows and the stories leap out. A real page turner in all senses of the word. May lack a bit of pre history and nerdy detail for the characters but that should be sortable in the threatened (pre)sequels
I liked this and want to read another book in this world. There is much going on that sets up later stories that I would like to see pay out. I like the magic as a form of technology presented in the book.

The stage actors blocking elements of the story is odd and I'm not certain completely necessary. There needed to be some additional wordsmithing in the first chapter, but the text smoothed out after that.
It's rare that I impulse buy a 99 cent novella and find a new favorite series, but here we are. Starting on book one, I thought I might be in for a forgettable fantasy lark, but the author had a surprise and a half lying in wait for me. I found myself falling in love with a bumbling squire with a Past and a coldly competent Wild Mage on the run. These two characters feel real and realized, and even the "bad guys" have clear, believable, and occasionally even sympathetic motivations. Even the supporting or momentary characters are fleshed out with detail and nuance that makes them feel earned and impactful. Look, It costs, what, 10 dollars to buy all 3 books in this series, and I would lay very good odds that you will not be disappointed. Give it a shot.
I absolutely enjoyed this book and devoured it in my free time (much like one of the dragons in the asteroid..)

Character development was smooth and attractive. I got connected to Jonas and Rime, Xenon and Mercury, Linus and Sideways. They all held their place in the story, no one was useless or a waste of words.

The story itself was very good. There was a small bit left unsaid at the end, to leave me searching the internet for the next chapter, and feeling sad when I didn't find it. The plot stays true and fun the entirety of the book, there are no need for new hooks or extra twists.

I am giddy and excited for the next book, which the author PROMISES TO WRITE. GET ON IT G. DEREK!
