In “Barriers to Love,” psychotherapist Marina Peralta uses her own life story to address the question of bisexual identity. Set in Mexico and California, Marina reveals how early sexual abuse led to sexual confusion in her adolescence. Jilted by her first boyfriend, comforted by a lesbian, and controlled by her widowed mother, she marries an emotionally detached man, and finds love with a woman. With vivid honesty, she portrays her love affairs with both men and women, and why the person and not the gender guides her choice of partner.

Barriers to Love Embracing a Bisexual Identity Marina Peralta Penelope James Books Reviews
Marina Peralta has written a riveting account of her life and her search for a sexual identity. She dares to question everything we believe about love, sex and forming bonds. This is a work that will help many who struggle with intimacy and gender identity. Her personal experiences lets many know that they are not alone and that is alright to search for the answers to their questions.
Works of fiction can be entertaining but when someone shares their life with you it becomes real and as a reader you gain insight into areas that cannot be fully illuminated by someone who has not traveled that road. That is what I find most compelling about this work.
I don’t generally read memoirs but this book came highly recommended by a friend. And she was right! This one is indeed gripping and gives a wonderful perspective on a bisexual woman’s life. Most of us go through life not knowing how people of alternate sexual persuasions live, feel or think. This book seeks to correct that and busts a few myths along the way.
The author does a good job of throwing light on a taboo topic. That she is a therapist by profession may have something to do with how she has handled the subject so well. What is really commendable is that she grew up in the 1970s when social pressure on the LGBT community may have been immense. But despite the setbacks, she lived her life how she wanted without giving in to the accepted norms of her time. Hats off to this brave woman!
Marina Peralta tells a heart-warming story of a woman – an accomplished dancer and a clinical psychologist – looking for love while rejecting conventions at a time when gender and sexual equality was unheard of. That the book is autobiographical and based on the author’s own life is what makes it even more interesting.
The story touches upon all aspects of the writer’s life – right from suffering sexual abuse as a child to her sexual awakening as an adult. In between she has to endure bad relationships with men and a cold, loveless marriage. Eventually she finds comfort in the arms of another woman. She blossoms as a person when she realises that she can have successful relationships with people of both genders. After she comes to terms with her bisexuality she is able to help others.
“Barriers to Love” is written with a lot of sensitivity and grace.
A must-read for people of every sexual orientation.
Very engaging and vivid account of a courageous woman that in the midst and against of all odds finds and keeps an honest and pristine sense of self.
I would have never read a book quite like this. However I must say that I was surprised by how much it taught me about the way we ( humans) love and share intimacy. I'm a heterosexual female. Maria's book showed me that it really isn't about heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual because ultimately we all feel love and we all want to share intimacy with someone else. The way we love just as the way we look is very different. I would definitely recommend this read, especially if you are like me and you've lived a conformed and conservative life. It will open your eyes to new ways.
Oppression leveled against an individual, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, or race can be devastating and crippling to the recipient of that destructive energy. Ms. Peralta courageously shares her journey through loss, cultural pressures and erotic encounters as she pursues a self free of these distortions and prejudices.
Throughout these pages, the reader is brought into the depth of her passion, fueling a quest for self knowledge, explorations of sexual orientation and her desire to share the wisdom these challenges brought.
Immigrating from her native Mexico, Ms. Peralta captures the true spirit within us all, as she pursues a better life. Leaving behind the oppressive forces that had previously represented her “barriers to love” we are witness to her strength and resilience.
Sexual orientation is still being held within the constraints of moral controversy just as gender equity, slavery, race, and religious persecution have been for millennium in human history. Join Ms. Peralta as she exposes her own struggles to find truth and love, a right woven in the fabric of all human beings.
