This book has been a dream of mine for many years. I've finally been able to take the time to gather all of the pictures of the guitars and put them in one place. On these pages you will see a collection of guitars that I have been collecting for nearly 42 years. Everything from my first Silvertone acoustic guitar that I started playing when I was 3 or 4 years old, to a guitar that I bought just a few months before finishing this book is in here. I've even included some never seen before pictures of my younger years playing music. Some of them are a little embarrassing, but hey, I was an 80's teen. Every guitar in this world has a story behind it. Many of the guitars that I have collected over the years can't be traced back to the day they were purchased, but some of them can, and some of them have amazing stories to tell. I've tried to include as many of those stories as I could in this book. Guitar collecting has always been a passion of mine, and I would like to share it with you.

I recently bought 2 copies of 'The Collection" I can't recommend this book enough. I am a guitar collector myself, although not nearly to the extent of Mr. Schiff. I consider every guitar I own as art work, they make you feel better anytime you look at them and or play them. I don't go a day without enjoying them. Both copies arrived today, one autographed to me and one to my friend & luthier, Darin Mahoney! This the best gift one can give another guitar player/luthier. The book itself is very well written and a real treasure of guitars but it is more than that. It is the author's auto biography through his passion for guitars. I had heard the story of the fire from the author's dad, Daryl, and this book brings those guitars and all the others together in one wonderful archive of musical instruments. Thanks so much for sharing such a personal "Collection"! This book will go into my own "Collection" as a center piece, eventually to find its way down to my own heirs (hopefully not too soon!). What a fantastic book! As a fellow collector of fine vintage instruments, I could literally feel Daryl's love for the instruments as I read through this very well written book. His guitar collection is amazing! I especially enjoyed reading about his 59 and 60 Les Pauls as well as the many pre-CBS Stratocasters that he owns. The stories of the guitars' origins were a really fun read as well. As collectors, we all want to know where the guitars originally came from.
The photos are gorgeous. I just can't say enough good things about this book.
If you love vintage guitars, this book is a MUST HAVE. It's an especially fun read considering that Daryl has found a way to make a living doing the thing that he most loves; playing guitar.

Got my copy a couple of days ago and as at least one other reviewer has stated I couldn't put this book down. Full of great eye candy whether you are a player or collector or not. I know Mr. Schiff is a working musician who tours extensively, and it seems he has made use of much of his time acquiring some unique pieces and rarities during his travels. The photography is excellent and the stories he has regarding each instrument adds a wonderful personal touch and a bit of humor. His enthusiasm for the instruments is obvious, both as beautiful pieces and of course for their musical qualities. He plays them as well, since they are meant to be played, not just collected. His collection spans more models than I can mention and he has some true gems in here from every major guitar maker. Thanks sharing this in book form and letting us enjoy your passion!
The Collection arrived in the mail at a very busy time so it was hard to see it on my dresser every night knowing I didn't have time to read it yet . . . Turns out I was smart to wait because once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down until the last page was read. What a great book! I found it fascinating since I am a very amateur player and uneducated in vintage guitars. I learned a lot and enjoyed all the stories. Imagine if these guitars could talk what other stories they could tell! Within the first few pages I was wishing there was a pocket in the back of the book with a CD in it so we could hear these amazing instruments. Then I read that one of the guitars was used in Keith Urban's recording of "Stupid Boy" (buy the book to find out which guitar) so I grabbed my iPod and headphones to listen while I continued to read. I wish there were more specific references to the recordings made with each of these guitars . . . for example I would love to know which Timeless tracks feature the 1936 Martin D-18 and other guitars used on that album. Congrats, Marty, on a great book that is a must read for anyone who appreciates rare and beautiful guitars. I hope it inspires Vince Gill to publish his collection (with a CD in the back of course!)
I am not a musician nor do I pretend to have an ounce of musicality in my body, but I love listening to music. I appreciate that music has helped me cope with many events in my life, some happy and others not so happy. I know that to make good music requires good musical instruments and talent, both being possessed by the author of this book - Daryl (Marty) Schiff. I've met Marty and seen him perform; and I know that he comes from a very talented, musical family (buy the book to find out who if you don't already know). I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his passion for collecting vintage guitars and admired the many beautiful, color pictures of the guitars he has collected over a 40 year span. A special treat in the book is the inclusion of some personal pictures of himself and other family members. I loved reading the stories describing how he acquired many of his guitars. The passion he has for guitars shines throughout this book and it was a fun and enjoyable read.
This book is junk.i buy lots of guitar related books and this book is terrible.For the almost 60.00 it cost me to get it to my house i thought that it would be a great book ,what a disappointment.this is just a cheap, Thin book that is not well done in any way.cover looked great but that is it.I had to pay to send it back! lost 10.00 with tax and shipping but learned an important lesson about ordering on !
Really enjoyed this one. Not only lots of cool photos of a large guitar collection, but you get the stories behind each one from a guy who knows his stuff and has a passion for the guitar.
