At first you hate all of the characters. If you persevere, they grow on you and you realize that you do care about them and what happens to them. They are quirky, flawed, and, at bottom, real human beings. Proulx's prose style also takes some adjusting, but the rhythm of her writing is akin to poetry, and her similes are original and spot on.

This novel is one of my all time favorite, but I understand why some people don't like it. Quoyle is not a hero. He's a victim. He's ugly, awkward, marginally employed. He is abandoned and hopeless. He takes his daughters and maiden aunt to Flour Sack Cove, Newfoundland.
Flour Sack Cove is a brutal place. It offers nothing but a run down ancestral home and a job writing the shipping news. The town is plagued with sex abuse, car wrecks, drowning, seal clubbing, and old curses. It doesn't offer a broken man a soft place to land.
Despite all these things this novel is heartfelt and heart breaking. It is inspired. If a man like Quoyle can find redemption in place like Flour Sack Cove then anything is possible.
You can have the beautiful people and the beautiful places. It'll take the promise of strength and love, the possibility of magic.
Any other author may have told the same story with twice as many words and not have communicated half as much about the landscape and the people. This was my second reading and the best of the two.
Annie Proulex's words resemble the geographical location. Did I tell you that from this I have planned a trip to New Foundland?
Quoyle is a not-so-good-looking man with an enormous chin who is used to being the odd man out. He unfortunately falls madly in love with Petal who, after being married to him briefly enough to produce 2 daughters, leaves him only to die shortly thereafter. Quoyle carries a torch for Petal since she is the only person to ever show him affection. But his aunt comes to visit and talks him into moving to the old family home in Newfoundland.

The bulk of the novel tracks his first year in this unforgiving environment. The characters are richly drawn and we love to see him growing ever so slowly and gaining skills in a number of areas including boating, journalism, parenting, and courtship. The joy of this book is the beautiful descriptions of the Newfoundland communities and ever present ocean. I felt like I knew what it was like to live there.
The place is the “Rock”; Newfoundland, Canada; six thousand miles of coast, blind wrapped in fog. It’s a story about relationships between diverse and colourful characters described as richly as lobster chowder. It’s a story about people with secret pasts (revealed). It`s a story about Newfoundland, a land with a savage history and brutal weather, a land with tremendous beauty… on the horizon, icebergs like white prisons, the immense blue fabric of the sea, rumpled and creased.
It’s a beautifully written story with bold metaphors… pancakes of submerged ice; fog as dense as cotton waste; bristled commas of shrimp; winning the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. A story about the human spirit interconnected in a compelling story line. It’s a story about a love affair, awkward, but lovely.
The Shipping News, exceptionally well researched, exceptionally entertaining.
I enjoyed this book immensely. It was a quick read, with endearing, oddball characters. I wasn't immediately drawn into this book; the main character Quoyle seems like such a chump, but that quickly changed.

Ms. Proulx is a gifted writer, her words have an excellent flow and rhythm without being over the top. The characters are vividly portrayed and despite there foibles you end up rooting for them. My favorite chapter was the Christmas pageant. I felt like I was in the audience.
This story about Quoyle, the quintessential "fish out of water," is one of my all time favorites. This book made the rounds in my very large family and we all enjoyed it. My dad, who was nearly 90 at the time, told me he laughed so hard at one point that he dropped his book on the floor and couldn't continue reading it until the nurse came in and picked it up for him! Sure, you have to get beyond the description of possibly the biggest loser in the history of literature (almost painful to read about), but it is well worth it if you are a lover of literary fiction.
Our story follows a misfit named Quoyle. A mishapen lump of a child raised by a harshly critical dad,bullied by his brothers, victimized by his wife, exploited by the newspaper where he worked then laid off with little thought, the high point of his life was his two daughters and one friend. His friend moved away but managed to get him a job working for a two bit paper in Newfoundland after his aunt convinces him to move back to their ancestral home there. He settles into his job getting better slowly, makes friends, meets a woman as strange as he is,grows as a father and starts to come alive in this heartwarming tale of redemption written by a master of the English language. Annie Proulx released The Shipping News twenty five years ago in 1993 to deservedly rave reviews. It should be a boring read about a place you wouldn't be caught dead in but somehow it works, by novel's end you care about the people you have met stuck in this out of the way corner of the world. It starts out a bit too tongue in cheek for my taste but the scene soon switched to Newfoundland and Proulx hits her stride with a touching depiction of what life in a remote, backward, and harsh environment is like. Just what I'd want for winter read.
