This is the third book that I have read from Cheryl St. John, I am slowly but surely making my way through her books. When I saw the title of this story it immediately grabbed me, then the blurb sealed the deal. I don't think the blurb did this story justice, not at all. This story was everything I wasn't expecting and I was in love with these characters before I even finished the third chapter.

"Always thinkin’ she was better and dreamin’ of a big house to live in. Told her a hundred times life deals you the rotten hand you deserve, and you just have to play it the way you see it. There ain’t no fairy-tale endings to be had."

Noah and Kate meet under grime circumstances, when he has to deliver the news that she is now a Widow. Noah's soul intention was to tell Kate about the death of her husband, who is also his brother but when he sees that she is carrying his brother's baby and see's her living conditions he begins to wonder if leaving her is the right thing to do. When Noah meets her mother, which I am pretty sure he wants to throw through the window, he decides to take Kate and care for her. Noah never had the intentions of replacing Levi in Kate's life but, he wants to give her a chance at a decent life and be with his Nephew or Niece since that's all that's left of his brother. Given this may be the only chance Kate has to get away from her less then happy life, she doesn't think twice to take Noah up on his offer.

“You lied,” she accused, her voice no longer wavering. “You used me and you lied. I want to forgive you. I should. I know I should sit here and pray for your soul and forgive you. But you know what, Levi? I don’t forgive you.”

Kate is someone Noah was not expecting. Given the circumstances that her husband died, she should be angry or in the least not excited about living with him. This woman finds the bright side in everything. She sees life as a blessing and even though her husband simply married her because he wanted to celebrate the consummation of the marriage and nothing else, she still keeps a positive attitude. Noah is the complete opposite of her. He's brooding and quiet. He has scars from a horrible accident and hides from the world. He doesn't like the stares people give him, he doesn't like the disgust written all over their faces. He stays on his farm and deals with people when the circumstances call for it. Kate wants to know him, she doesn't see the scars, she sees a man who gave her a chance. She sees a man who has a big heart and she wants more from him.

“You handle disappointment real well."

“What do you mean?”

“Make the best of everything, I mean.”

“It’s a waste of time to regret, don’t you think?”

When a marriage of convenience becomes something Kate doesn't want, her determination to show Noah he's worth more then that becomes her goal. She doesn't want Noah to marry her out of obligation, she wants him to marry her because he loves her. The problem that Kate is having is making Noah realize he is worth loving and scars are surface wounds, they don't define what a person is.

After I had read this book the song Name by the GooGoo Dolls came to my mind, there is a line in the song that I really felt was Noah,

Scars are souvenirs you never lose, the past is never far
And did you lose yourself way out there?
Don't it make you sad to know that life is more than who you are?

How he lets life pass him by because of the scars he carries. This story is about learning to forgive and learning to see that there is more to a person then their appearance. That sometimes what people perceive as disgust or disappointment, is simply guilt and pain. I loved these characters, they were polar opposites in almost every way. I loved how they could teach one another what love really feels like.

His Secondhand Wife Cheryl StJohn 9780373293605 Books Reviews

When Noah Cutter travels to Boulder to claim his dead brother's(Levi) body, he also goes to see Levi's widow. Levi had gotten Kate pregnant and left her; she lives with her disgruntled mother, lives in a shack, and works long hours in a laundry. Noah tells her "You're comin with me"; Kate decides very quickly that she has nothing holding her where she is and she wants more for her child than she can give it so she leaves with Noah to travel to his ranch. While Noah is quiet, a man of very few words, Kate talks almost unceasingly. When Kate meets Estelle, Levi's mother, she cannot believe the terrible things that she says about Noah; Estelle had married Noah's father after the death of Noah's mother and believed Levi basically hung the moon. Noah knows what kind of man Levi actually was but his brother was the only one who reached out to Noah after his terrible accident. Scarred by an accident with barbed wire when younger, he avoids people who stare and talk about him. Noah yearns to just be touched and not scorned because of his scars. The story of how Kate gets him to open up little by little, how she defends him against Estelle, how she grows to love him, and how Noah learns to trust Kate just makes for an absolutely great story.
I loved this one. It was sweet with a bit angst and just satisfying. In this story, Noah Cutter finds out his brother and co-owner of their family ranch was shot dead leaving a pregnant wife. Noah does the honorable thing and offers Katherine a place at the Ranch to leave for both protection and familial obligation. After all Levi's unborn child will inherit the ranch someday.

Katherine and Noah then begin this journey to define her place there and in the process begin to form a bond together. It predictable what happens but it doesn't make the story any less enjoyable.

Noah was a man unused to love due to his scarring and Katherine was the most optimistic character I've ever read. Together, they made this beauty and the beast trope sweet and hopeful. I appreciate the author for giving Noah and Katherine some shade so they weren't perfect people. They were flawed and human. I've read Cheryl St. John before and this one was almost as good as The Land of Dreams. I wish she will get her books on audio.
Rich, emotional writing that delves into the ocean deep feelings of the hero, leaves the reader shaken, and wrenches the heart with sympathy for this scarred and withdrawn man. From the outset, Cheryl St. John captured me with a hero shrouded in mystery. Chapter 1 opens with him tersely warning a messenger not to get close, an action which immediately piqued my curiosity. Skillfully, Ms. St. John draws out the moment of revelation to the hero's flaw, leaving the reader practically panting from the intrigue of it all. By the time I discovered what was wrong with Noah, the suspense had built up so much that I was fearful of finding out.

Kate is the perfect match for Noah's withdrawn, uncommunicative, and taciturn personality. Her chatter filled the void and pretty soon, her words, voice, and everything about her fill his heart. Very moving for me in the end was the power of love that stripped away all Noah's fear. Finally, he was able to reveal all of himself in the light, and the tenderness Kate showed let him know that in the eyes of at least one woman he was a man worthy of admiration.

Touching, moving, and memorable are the most apt adjectives I can come up with for this novel. Beautifully written with incredible character development, the story is still on rewind in my head and pulls sighs of satisfaction out of this romantic at heart. Great for every Christian romance reader.
